Description

xviii+136 with frontispiece, diagrams and table. Octavo (8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″) bound in original wrappers. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5054) First edition. The summer of 1911 saw Schlechter journey to Cologne, Germany, to embark upon the third great match of his career. His opponent, Dr Siegbert Tarrasch, had been keenly interested in securing the match. Having suffered a painful defeat (+3 -8 =5) by Lasker three years earlier, and being mindful of Schlechter’s brilliant showing against the same foe, Tarrasch was understandably anxious to demonstrate that he was not a spent force in the constellation of world class masters. Played in the rooms of the sponsoring Cologne Chess Club during an oppressive heat wave, the contest evoked only mild interest in European chess circles. To the considerable surprise of many, however, the 49 year “Praceptor Germanie” divided honors with his younger opponent, winning the fourth, eight and tenth. This work also includes the two Haupturnier contests A and B edited by Dr Karl Deichmann. Condition: Previous owner’s neat pen name to front wrapper. Edge wear with some closed tears, corners chipped, spine 3/4 missing, cover some edges missing, protected by removale plastick covere, else about very good.
